Reformer Pilates FAQ
-
Everyone begins with Reformer Fundamentals, regardless of fitness level or previous experience. It's where you learn how the Reformer works, how to set it up for your body, and the foundational movement principles that underpin every level. From there, most clients move through the pathway at their own pace - there's no pressure to progress before you're ready.
-
No. Reformer Fundamentals is designed specifically for people who have never set foot on a Reformer. There are no prerequisites - just turn up. If you've done Pilates elsewhere and aren't sure which level to join, get in touch before booking and we'll help you find the right starting point.
-
Your instructor will let you know. At Luma, progression is based on movement quality rather than how long you've been coming. When your technique is consistent and the choreography feels settled, we'll suggest moving up. You can also read our guide to progressing through the Luma class levels for more detail.

Mat Pilates uses your bodyweight and gravity as resistance. The Reformer adds a moving carriage, springs, and a pulley system, which allows for a much wider range of exercises and more precise load control. Both are effective - the Reformer simply gives instructors more tools to work with, and makes it easier to modify exercises for different bodies and ability levels. In many cases, yes. The Reformer is low-impact and highly adaptable, and our instructors are experienced in modifying exercises for clients managing injuries or returning to exercise after time away.
Get in touch before booking and we'll advise on the right starting point. If you're unsure whether Pilates is appropriate for your condition, check with your GP or physiotherapist first.
