Your very first class. Reformer Fundamentals
Fundamentals is designed for complete beginners. No prior Pilates experience needed, no fitness level required.
In your first few classes, you'll get to know the Reformer: how the carriage moves, what the springs do, and how to adjust everything to suit your body. Your instructor will guide you through the foundational movements at a relaxed pace, with plenty of time to ask questions and get comfortable.
Think of it less as a workout and more as an introduction. By the end, you'll understand the basic principles of Pilates – breath, alignment, core connection – and you'll have a feel for what your body can do. That's more than enough for now.
Come as you are. Grip socks on, curiosity intact.

Reformer Fundamentals FAQ
-
None at all. Fundamentals is designed from the ground up for complete beginners. Your instructor will explain everything – the equipment, the language, the movements – from scratch. There is nothing you need to know before you walk in.
-
Completely normal, and something our instructors are very used to. Fundamentals classes are small – never more than 10 people – and the pace is always relaxed. Nobody is watching or judging. The whole point of the class is to learn, and that means asking questions is not just allowed, it's encouraged.
-
Most people attend three to five Fundamentals classes before they're ready to move to Fundamentals Progressing. Some people feel ready sooner, some take a little longer; both are completely fine. Your instructor will let you know when they think you're ready for the next step.
-
A Reformer is the main piece of Pilates equipment – a sliding carriage on a frame, with springs, straps and a footbar that allow a huge range of movements. The springs provide resistance and assistance simultaneously, making exercises both effective and adaptable to every body. It was developed by Joseph Pilates and remains the gold standard of Pilates practice.
-
Absolutely. The Reformer actually makes many movements easier to learn than mat-based exercise, because the equipment supports and guides your body as you build strength and awareness. Fundamentals classes are gentle by design. The goal is to move well, not to push hard.
-
Comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid baggy clothes – your instructor needs to see your alignment. Grip socks are required for safety and hygiene; if you don't have a pair, we sell them in our studio shop.
