Reformer Fundamentals Progressing
Our transitional class
You've done a few Fundamentals classes. Something is starting to click. The carriage doesn't feel strange anymore, you know roughly where your springs should be, and you're beginning to notice what your body is doing during each movement. Fundamentals Progressing at Luma Pilates in Edinburgh's New Town is exactly where you go next.
Getting confident. Fundamentals Progressing
You've done a few Fundamentals classes and something is starting to click. Progressing is the bridge between your first steps and your first real practice.
You'll revisit the core movements from Fundamentals but with more depth and a little more pace. Your instructor will start to layer in new exercises and introduce you to a wider range of the Reformer's possibilities – footwork variations, simple arm and leg series, and the beginnings of spinal articulation work. You'll also start to develop body awareness: noticing your alignment, understanding which muscles are doing the work, and beginning to self-correct.
This is still a supportive, guided environment. There's no pressure to keep up, just an invitation to keep going.
Ready when you've attended three to five Fundamentals classes and feel at home on the Reformer.
Where does Fundamentals Progressing fit in the Luma journey?
Our Reformer Pilates programme is built as a genuine progression. Each level designed to flow naturally into the next. Here's where Fundamentals Progressing sits:
Reformer Fundamentals– your very first classes. Getting to know the equipment, the language, and the basic principles of Pilates. No experience needed.
Reformer Fundamentals Progressing – you are here. Building on what you've learned, developing body awareness, and preparing for the step up to Pilates 1.
Reformer Pilates 1– where your practice properly begins. Core principles in motion, a measured pace, and the foundations of a long-term Pilates practice.
Reformer Pilates 2 – deepening the work. Longer sequences, more complex configurations, and real precision of movement.
Reformer Pilates 3– the full classical and contemporary repertoire. For those who have put in the time and are ready to be genuinely challenged.

Fundamentals Progressing FAQ
-
A good rule of thumb is three to five Fundamentals classes – enough to feel comfortable on the equipment and familiar with the basic movements. You don't need to feel confident or polished, just at home. If you're unsure, ask your instructor after class and they'll tell you honestly. Most people are ready sooner than they think.
-
Quite possibly, yes. If you have solid Reformer foundations from elsewhere, Fundamentals Progressing is often a better starting point at Luma than going back to complete Fundamentals. Book an intro pack and let your instructor know your background in your first class – they'll assess where you're at and confirm the right level for you.
-
Fundamentals Progressing is still very much about building and consolidating. The pace is measured and the focus is on developing genuine body awareness rather than advancing the repertoire. Pilates 1 moves faster, introduces more complex sequences, and assumes you already understand the equipment and the core principles. Most clients spend three to eight weeks in Fundamentals Progressing before making the step up.
-
Everyone in a Fundamentals Progressing class is at a similar stage – this isn't a mixed-level class where you'll feel out of your depth. The whole point of Luma's levelled structure is that you're always in a room with people who are roughly where you are, guided by an instructor who can give you genuine, relevant attention.
-
That's completely fine – there's no timeline. Some clients move through quickly, others take longer, and both are entirely valid. Your instructor will never push you to progress before you're ready, and there's no awkwardness in staying at a level while you build your foundations properly. Moving well matters more than moving fast.
