Luma Pilates, Edinburgh's New Town
Our Approach
Move well, live well.
Luma is a dedicated Pilates, Barre and Yoga studio in Edinburgh's New Town. Reformer and Barre classes are capped at ten, Mat and Yoga at twelve. Every class is correction-led: instructors observe, cue and adjust throughout rather than setting exercises and stepping back.
This is the essence of what we do. Everything else: the way we structure classes, the instructors we work with, the size of the room, follows from it.
Teaching environment
Small classes, by design
Luma is not a large studio and was never intended to be one. Classes are capped so that every client receives individual attention throughout. Not a correction at the start and then left to follow along, but genuine observation and feedback for the duration of the session.
We do not aim to grow beyond that. The model only works at this scale.
A class of eight or ten people is a fundamentally different environment from a class of fifteen. Your instructor can see what your body is doing, notice when something shifts, and know when you're ready to progress.

Correction-led teaching
Teaching method
Every class at Luma is taught with correction as a core part of the session, not an occasional addition to it. Instructors observe movement in real time and offer verbal and hands-on cues throughout.
Pilates done with poor alignment reinforces poor alignment. The difference between going through the motions and building something that carries into the rest of your life is the quality of the instruction in the room.
"The perfect pace with the right amount of hands on adjustment making sure you're always getting what you should be from each movement."

Instructors who have gone deep
The team
Every instructor at Luma teaches because their discipline is their primary focus. Not a sideline, not one qualification among many, but the thing they have spent years developing expertise in.
Our teaching standard is led by co-founder Lucia Poulter, a Comprehensive BASI-certified Pilates instructor with 26 years of teaching experience across four continents. The wider team includes instructors trained through STOTT, The Pilates Center Boulder, Balanced Body and other established movement disciplines.
A structured progression
Class levels
The Reformer programme runs from Fundamentals through to Level 3. Progression is not automatic. Clients move up when their instructor is confident they are ready, not on a fixed timeline. The levels exist because the work builds on itself.
The same principle applies across disciplines. Barre, Mat and Yoga classes are taught with the same attention to where each client is and what they are ready for.
Reformer Fundamentals
Complete beginners start here. No experience, no fitness level required.
Fundamentals Progressing
Build confidence with the essentials before stepping into a full-level class.
Reformer Pilates 1
Your first full-level class. The pace picks up and the choreography gets richer.
Reformer Pilates 2
More flow, more complexity, more challenge for an established practice.
Reformer Pilates 3
Our most advanced class, with complex sequencing built for pace and precision.
What this means for you
The result
Clients who practise at Luma consistently tend to describe the same arc: an early surprise at how much the practice asks of them, a growing sense of physical awareness and control, and eventually a body that moves better in everything else they do. Not just in class, but at a desk, on a run, in the ordinary physical demands of daily life.
Move well,
live well.
