Studio Etiquette at Luma Pilates: How It Works
Luma is a boutique studio with small classes. That is deliberate: it is what allows instructors to see you, cue you properly, and adjust what you are doing in real time. It also means that what each person does in the room affects everyone else in it.
None of what follows is complicated. Most of it is common sense. But having it written down means you know what to expect, and we know we have been clear about it.

Arrive on time
Classes start on time and latecomers cannot be admitted. If you arrive after the start time, our standard cancellation policy applies.
The studio doors open ten minutes before each class. Use that window to get settled and let your instructor know anything relevant before the session begins.
Tell your instructor before class
If you have an injury, a recent surgery, a health condition, or anything else that affects how you move or what you should avoid, tell your instructor before the session begins. Not at the end. Not halfway through. Before.
This is not about gatekeeping. It’s about teaching you properly. An instructor who knows about your shoulder, your lower back, or your recent procedure can adjust exercises, offer modifications, and keep an eye on how you are responding. An instructor who finds out mid-class has much less to work with.
The same applies if you are pregnant. Please get in touch with us before booking your first class so we can make sure the format and level are right for where you are in your pregnancy. Email us at [email protected] before your first session.
Grip socks and what to wear
Grip socks are required for Reformer, Tower, and Barre classes. They provide traction on the equipment that bare feet do not. If you do not have a pair, we have grip socks available to purchase at the studio.
Wear comfortable, fitted clothing you can move freely in. Fitted is better than loose for Pilates because your instructor needs to see how your body is moving. Bare feet are fine for Mat and Yoga classes.
Phones off, please
Please switch your phone to silent before entering the studio. A Pilates class requires concentration: yours and everyone else's. Notifications, calls, and the reflex to check a screen interrupt that.
If you are expecting an urgent call, let your instructor know before class begins.
Scents
Please avoid strong perfume or aftershave on the day of class. In a small, enclosed studio, scent carries. Some clients are sensitive to it, and it can make the environment uncomfortable for people working hard in close proximity.
Equipment
Your instructor will show you how to set up and adjust the equipment for your body and the exercises in each session. Please follow their guidance, and return the equipment to the correct position when instructed. Do not adjust springs, straps, or other components without being shown how, as incorrect setup changes the exercise and can make it less comfortable or effective.
At the end of class, wipe down your Reformer and Box with the provided anti-bac spray and tissues. It takes thirty seconds and keeps the studio clean for the next person.
Respect the space and each other
Luma is a focused environment. Clients come to focus and work, and the atmosphere in the studio reflects that. Keep conversation low before and during class, and take any longer conversations outside once the session has finished.
Respect the space around other clients on the equipment. The studio is designed so that everyone has room to move. Stay within your own working area.
Cancellations and no-shows
Please cancel at least 12 hours before your class so you do not lose your credit and so the space can be offered to someone on the waitlist. Late cancellations and no-shows affect other clients who want to book.
In short
A small studio with small classes works when everyone treats it that way. Arrive on time, tell your instructor what they need to know, look after the equipment, and be considerate of the people around you. We will take care of the rest.
