What is Mat Pilates?
The answer is simple: Mat Pilates is the original form of Pilates, created by Joseph Pilates himself, and it requires nothing more than your body, a mat, and a little curiosity.
Unlike the Reformer, which uses springs and pulleys to add resistance, Mat Pilates relies on your own body weight to build strength, stability, and control.
Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s the easier option!
Mat work challenges you to engage your deep core muscles, improve your alignment, and move with precision. Every exercise is designed to connect your mind and body, and because there’s no equipment to guide you, you learn to create that control from within.
One of the best things about Mat Pilates is its versatility. It can be adapted for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners, and it’s something you can practice anywhere. Many of our clients love learning mat-based movements they can use at home or when travelling, giving them the freedom to keep their practice alive outside the studio.
Mat work also lays the foundation for everything you’ll do on the Reformer. By mastering the basics on the mat, you build the awareness and strength that translate beautifully onto the equipment. It’s the purest expression of the Pilates method and a wonderful way to connect more deeply with your body.
At Luma Pilates, we weave mat work into our teaching to give you a rounded, classical experience. Whether you’re rolling up, reaching long, or holding steady, Mat Pilates offers a way to move that is both grounding and transformative.
So if you’ve been curious, why not give it a try? We’ll supply the mat and a highly experienced instructor. All you need to bring is yourself and an open mind. You might be surprised at just how powerful it feels.
